Immigration Search Methods   (Back to Main Immigration Page)
PRE - INTERNET Until the advent of the searchable online Ellis Island database individuals wishing to locate ships manifests for specific individuals had to scroll through microfilmed card indexes based on a Soundex number assigned to the surname of the individual one was researching.  The process could take hours and it was always possible that a Soundex card was not prepared for the immigrant.  The cards were prepared during the Great Depression as part of various projects such as the WPA etc.

The cards located for Riwke / Eva and Aron / Harry are as follows:
The information on these cards, as opposed to many, is quite user friendly and understandable.  It is obvious that the ship they emigrated on was the Cedric and that it landed on 10 3 08, October 3, 1908.

Without further instruction it was only after viewing the mainfest that it became clear that Riwke and Aron were respectively 53 and 4 years old at that time.  The notation 44 16 and 44 17 refers to the page and line number that their entries were recorded on.
